free range

Understanding what grocery-store buzzwords mean—and what they don’t mean—is essential for conscientious shopping.

FREE-RANGE: Indicates that an animal was raised with access to the outdoors. This claim is only regulated by the USDA for poultry chickens, not for egg-laying chickens or for meat. Keep in mind, however, that only five minutes of open-air access per day is enough to qualify for a free- range poultry claim.Where do you suppose those animals are the rest of the day??!!
